The temblor struck near the town of Muisne, roughly 250 miles from Quito, Ecuador's capital, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The quake was initially reported as a magnitude 7.4, but was later upgraded to a 7.8.
A magnitude-4.8 foreshock also struck in the same region Saturday. The 7.8 quake was then followed by a magnitude-5.4 temblor.
The extent of any damage was not immediately clear, but images from the region showed a fallen bridge and what appeared to be a damaged shopping center.
